KIRKCALDY KESTRELS   1                        PAISLEY PIRATES   3

In an absolute thriller In Kirkcaldy, Pirates defeated the reigning SNL champions 3-1 to continue their great start to the season, once again clinching the match in the final session of the match.

In a tight opening period, both netminders, Meechan for the visitors, and Little for the hosts, saw regular action at their end of the ice, but it was Pirates who got their noses in front in the fourteenth minute as Miller linked with Orr and Wilson to score on the powerplay after Kestrels had been called for having Too Many Men on the ice. While chances continued to come at both ends, the teams headed for the dressing room after 20 minutes with the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The pattern of play continued as before in the second period, with goalies and defences equal to the pressure placed on them, but at the half way point it was the turn of the home team to get on the board as Floyd shot past Meechan to tie the scores. Certainly in the second session the Pirates’ netminder was the busier of the two, but with the scores tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes, both sides were left with everything to play for with only the final period to come.

Both sides came out for the last session knowing that the first team to score would have a crucial advantage in what had been a tight game and, to the delight of the travelling support, it went the way of the visitors as Wilson netted on the powerplay in the 48th minute, from Miller and Orr, to nose them ahead. The penalties  were beginning to flow at regular intervals as both teams pushed for a vital marker, but after Pirates had played off no fewer than 3 minors, they got the clinching 3rd goal with 4 minutes left as David Orr netted an unassisted goal to tie up the points,  and send their supporters home very happy indeed.

Pirates will be delighted to clinch a vital away win at the home of the reigning champions, once again coming through in the final session to register the two points in a similar manner to their comeback at Dundee Comets the previous weekend. They now face another difficult tie at home to North Ayrshire Wild in a local derby this coming Sunday, the match facing off at 6.00pm at the Braehead Arena.
